Judge Carena Roller, Provincial Court of Manitoba

To set the stage for the day, Provincial Court Judge Carena Roller will provide a brief history of the child protection system in Manitoba and highlight some of the critical issues and challenges facing the system today. She will also touch on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Report’s recommendations on child protection.

Role of the Children's Advocate
Presenter: Corey La Berge, Deputy Children's Advocate

An independent officer of the legislative assembly, the Children’s Advocate is responsible for representing the rights, interests and viewpoints of children receiving, or entitled to receive, child welfare services. This presentation will include a discussion of the work of the Children’s Advocate, provide an update on the ongoing developments and anticipated changes to the office, and most importantly, address the dire situation that Manitoba’s Aboriginal children continue to experience notwithstanding a system of law committed to acting in their best interests.
