The Municipal By-Law Enforcement Act
November 7, 2014

The new Municipal By-Law Enforcement Act will introduce a completely new "non-court based" system for dealing with the enforcement of municipal by-law infractions. It is expected that this legislation will be proclaimed in Spring 2015. The new system will be in force as of the proclamation date, i.e. the old system of charging someone with an offence using the Provincial Court will no longer be necessary. Municipalities need to prepare for these major changes in advance of the proclamation date.

You will be informed on the substance of the new law and how you can prepare for it. They will provide you with the tools to use as you assist your municipal clients to set up new systems.

Renouncing U.S. Citizenship - Why, How and What are the Consequences?
October 11, 2018

For U.S. citizens living in Canada, the decision whether to renounce their U.S. citizenship involves many complex considerations. An increasing number of U.S. citizens and dual citizens living abroad are grappling with this decision as they also contend with the complexity of the U.S. government’s worldwide taxation regime and recent U.S. tax reforms such as the “repatriation tax” and Global intangible low-taxed income (GILTI) rules.

This program will provide you with a thorough review of key considerations when advising clients contemplating whether to renounce their U.S. citizenship. You will learn to recognize the “red flags” for when to engage a specialist in U.S. cross-border tax considerations. You will also learn valuable information about the renunciation process itself and the consequences of renunciation, such as criminal inadmissibility cross border issues, etc.

This program will also review the criteria for who qualifies as a U.S. citizen. Many individuals born in Canada are not aware that they may be U.S. citizens based on the timing of a U.S. parent’s residence in the U.S.
