2015 Child Protection Program - Part 3 of 6
Parent Capacity Assessments
November 13, 2015
Jointly presented with the Court of Queen’s Bench Judges and the Provincial Court Judges

Parent Capacity Assessments (PCAs) are increasingly common in child protection cases, however the quality of the product and the process varies widely. This session examines the process, the product and the limitations of PCAs. It covers the following topics:

  • Danger of over reliance on PCAs
  • Best practices for PCAs
  • Practical considerations, including how should the assessment be initiated, who drafts the questions and determines what is sent to the assessor, how to qualify an expert, when to oppose qualification and whose witness is the expert when there is a joint retainer

Presenter: Justice Carole Curtis, Ontario Court of Justice
